The popularity of the game was hampered massively in the region by the fact that Fortnite in China has major differences when compared to other versions around the world. This is the result of Epic Games not being able to monetize the game the same way they have in other regions due to Chinese law. Now Fortnite is set to vanish from the region entirely with registrations for new accounts ceasing on November 1 and servers shutting down entirely on November 15.

Fortnite earns a lot of its revenue through microtransactions, which were outlawed by the Chinese government. This makes it difficult for Epic Games to turn a profit from the game in the region. Fortnite relies heavily on players buying skins and cosmetics by converting real money into V-bucks which they can then use to buy these items. Many of these skins are also censored, causing them to look different from other versions.

Fortnite was banned from China entirely in 2018, when the game was at the height of its popularity, due to many of the same censorship laws. This meant that Epic Games lost out on a lot of potential players. One of the most bizarre differences in the Chinese version of the game that likely turned many players away is that there can be multiple winners in a match. This is because Fortnite was changed to better accommodate Chinese values. If players survived longer than 20 minutes, they would be crowned victorious.

With Chinese servers now set to close on November 15, it makes one wonder how many players will actually be disappointed. Chinese law caused the game to be censored and changed to such an extent that the core gameplay loop is not the same as it is in the rest of the world, which gave Epic Games a very slim chance to succeed and benefit financially from the game in the region. While the rest of the world will be looking forward to new Fortnite skins, the Chinese market will be waving goodbye to the game entirely.
